People Before Bricks – The Alternative Aarhus Building & Urban Development Platform 2025
Cities are for people – not investors. In this platform for the 2025 local election, The Alternative Aarhus presents a vision for an Aarhus built on community, sustainability, and wellbeing, not speculation and overdevelopment.
For too long, construction has been driven by profit rather than people, leaving behind soulless architecture, social divides, and environmental damage. The Alternative wants to put citizens, nature, and democratic participation back at the heart of city-making.
The platform sets out five key priorities with concrete initiatives towards 2030:
-
Democratizing Urban Development – early citizen involvement, stronger local councils, and new forms of co-ownership and cooperative housing.
-
Space for the Good Life – affordable homes, mixed neighbourhoods, and 15-minute communities that connect daily life, nature, and wellbeing.
-
Building Within Planetary Boundaries – 80% less new construction, “preserve or explain” renovation rules, and climate- and biodiversity-based planning.
-
Architecture for Health and Beauty – enforceable quality standards and urban nature corridors to support mental wellbeing.
-
Generations Living Together – revitalizing existing neighbourhoods, turning large villas into shared homes, and creating safer, greener streets for children and seniors alike.
Aarhus must grow as a community – not as concrete.
Let’s build a city that feels alive, beautiful, and fair.
